Advocates for Animals
UK organisation campaigning against animal abuse and encouraging people to change their relationship with animals from one of exploitation/harm to one of respect and compassion.  They promote the protection of animals through investigations, campaigns, and public education.

Animal Aid
Campaigns against animal abuse, and promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle. The Education Department runs a free school speakers service, plus offering a range of materials for teachers and pupils.  Resources include videos/DVDs, Student Activities (lesson plans and worksheets), factsheets and information booklets, campaign leaflets and posters. Most of these are free to teachers.

Animal Behaviour Society (ABS)
The Animal Behavior Society's Education Committee was formed to promote quality instruction and training in the area of animal behavior. This section of the Animal Behavior Society's website is maintained by the Animal Behavior Society Education Committee. 

Animal Club
Animal Club is a national network of clubs around Australia created by Voiceless, the fund for animals. Animal Clubs inspire and encourage schools and students to get active for animal protection and to develop and foster the values, knowledge, understanding and skills needed to protect animals.

Animals in Mind (AiM)
A registered charity founded in 1996 in response to the growing number of people that have problem pets and dogs that were being re-homed or destroyed due to behaviour problems. Educates owners on behaviour problems to help reduce this problem.

Animalearn
As the education division of the American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS), Animalearn works to eliminate animal-use in education and are dedicated to assisting educators and students to find the most effective non-animal methods to teach and study science. The Science Bank is a free loan program of new and innovative life science software and educational products that enable educators and students to learn anatomy, physiology, and psychology lessons without harming animals, themselves, or the Earth.

Animals & Society Institute
The ASI seeks to advance institutional change for animals as an independent think tank as well as a producer of educational resources, publications and events. Click to look at some ASI educational resources, publications and event resources.

American Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPCA)
ASPCA Education offers valuable tips, articles, standards-based lessons, and activities for educators, librarians, and parents of school-aged children.  Here, you’ll find lists of the ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Book Award winners and the full archive of ASPCA Animalessons, our teacher newsletter, which contains a feature article accompanied by four reproducible, classroom- ready handouts.

Animal Responsibility Cyprus
This NGO is dedicated to helping animals on the island of Cyprus through various projects and humane education. They carry out presentations about animal welfare to school children and various extracurricular groups, in both English and Greek. They have also developed educational resources, such as My Best Friend Jason, a book addressing responsible dog ownership and related issues. The group has set up a campaign to protect bats of Cyprus and has developed leaflets and stickers to promote understanding about the issue and actions to take.  

Animal Wow
Animal Wow's mission is to inspire children toward positive values, life skills, and habits by turning pets into best friends. Their website includes videos and other products that can be purchased to teach about animal care and responsible pet ownership, with portions of the proceeds going back into humane education programmes. They also have a blog with constantly updated information on a range of topics involving pet ownership.

Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB)
European society promoting the study of animal behaviour.  Runs workshops, conferences and funds research and the education website: Feedback online

Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE) 
APHE provides professional development opportunities and networking for educators who promote humane attitudes toward people, animals and the environment.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
Aimed at teachers and Education professionals, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has developed its primary Education Pack - 3Rs for 4Rs, for teachers of Foundation Stage through to Key Stages 1 & 2, which is available on an interactive CD. They have also developed a pack for Key Stages 3 & 4 that addresses requirements of the Enterprise curriculum, and various informational leaflets are available online.

Best Friends Humane Education Programmes

The Blue Cross
The Blue Cross, Britain's Pet charity has offered a free education service to Primary Schools and Youth groups since 2005. Using our national network of fully-trained and CRB checked volunteers we have seen over 160,000 children aged 4-12. Our talks about Responsible Pet Care can be directly linked to areas of the National Curriculum such as Citizenship and PHSE and cover animal related activity badges for Guiding and Scouting groups. Talks are not a fundraising initiative but are part of our programme of information and education.

Born Free Foundation (UK)
The Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity working to prevent cruelty, alleviate suffering and encourage everyone to treat all individual animals with respect.  For amazing facts about some of the animals Born Free works to protect, download their Kids Go Wild factsheets.

Cats Protection
One of Cats Protection's main aims is to make information about cat welfare and care available to all, including young people. They provide Education Packs for teachers and work with youth organisations.

Compassion in World Farming
Compassion in World Farming’s aim is to end factory farming systems and all other practices, technologies and trades which impose suffering on farmed animals. CIWF produces a range of educational resources, available either free or competitively priced. Most can be downloaded free from the website.

Compassionate Action Institute
The Compassionate Action Institute created the “pleasebekind” website to provide information on a variety of animal issues to people around the world.

Dogs Trust
UK’s largest dog welfare charity. This site has a variety of downloadable resources linked to the National Curriculum. Additionally, they will do school visits in Wales, Northern Ireland, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Dublin and The North East and North West of England to deliver talks to children about responsible dog ownership and safety around dogs. The Humane Education Trust
The Humane Education Trust is dedicated to rekindling the spirit of care and respect for all life. Educators can order education materials to support the teaching of humane education and animal welfare in schools.

Humane Educators Reaching Out
Humane Educators Reaching Out aims to focus HE programmes in areas with high risk of animal abuse or violence. They offer free or low cost humane education programs. They also have a kids’ newsletter available on their site. Visit their site to learn more.

Humane Society Youth (formerly NAHEE)
Humane Society youth is the youth education affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). A non-profit organization, their work is supported by the Adopt-a-Classroom program, private grants, charitable donations, and allocations from The HSUS. 

Humane Teen
The teenage youth site of the Humane Society Youth , including the Humane High School, which offers video clips, career information, free online courses, and animal protection fact sheets. Visit Humane High School; the course is very popular and more will be added shortly.

Institute for Humane Education (IHE)
The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to creating a humane world through humane education. IHE offers a Humane Education Certificate Program (HECP) and a Masters in Humane Education.

International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organisations (IAHAIO)
IAHAIO, the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations, was founded in 1990 to gather together national associations and related organizations interested in advancing the understanding and appreciation of the link between animals and humans. 

International Fund for Animal Welfare
For more than 17 years, IFAW's Animal Action Education program has been giving young people the knowledge and tools to take positive action on behalf of animals and the environment. Each year during Animal Action Week (the first week of October) IFAW launches a new international education and outreach program that highlights a different animal welfare and conservation theme. Offering freeeducational materials in eight languages, special events, contests and awards, the program engages more than 5,000,000 young people worldwide each year.

Marine Conservation Society (MCS)
UK Charity dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its wildlife. Education dept organises the Cool Seas Roadshow, the MCS Coastal Challenge and Juvenile Frenzy, plus providing educational resources on balloon release, the marine world and marine wildlife threats.

The Monkey Sanctuary
For over 40 years, the Monkey Sanctuary in south eastern England has worked to promote the welfare, conservation and survival of South American primates. They aim to end the primate trade and abuse of captive primates, as well as promote the rehabilitation of captive primates and preservation of wild primates. They also offer free educational resources as well as on-site talks and workshops to teach students about primates and their work. To learn more, please visit their website.

National Councils of SPCAs South Africa
Animal Care and Sensitivity education furthers the sole object of the NSPCA, that is, to prevent cruelty, by addressing the core problem: lack of animal care education and knowledge.

The National Humane Education Society (NHES)
NHES provides humane education, rescue and relief assistance for animals, as well as screened adoption services. Through the Humane Education Department, they provide educational presentations to all ages and information services to members as well as to the general public.

Organisation for Respect and Care of Animals (ORCA)
This is a non-profit civil society organisation which contributes, by promoting respect, care and responsibility to animals, to recognition of animal welfare as an important factor of economic development, human livelihood and social well-being, and environmental protection. ORCA was founded in 2000 and the ORCA Education programme was initiated in 2002. This programme has resulted in integration of animal welfare as one of the main goals in the National Education Law, inclusion of AW in official school programmes and textbooks, the “Animal Welfare and Us” training programme for professional development of teachers, which has been certified by the State Institution for Improvement of Education and seen more than 1000 teachers trained. Since September 2009, ORCA has been running a project for development of Framework for National Animal Welfare Education Curriculum, supported by USAID.

The Pegasus Foundation works to improve animal welfare through effective grantmaking and education in the United States, the Caribbean, Native American lands and Kenya.

People-Pet Partnership (PPP)
The PPP is a public service program within the Center for the Study of Animal Well-Being at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University. PPP exists to research and educate the public about the human-animal bond and its applications. They offer an online curriculum for primary students, grades K-4 (ages 5-11) that focuses on responsible pet ownership:

Peoples Dispensary For Sick Animals (PDSA)
PDSA cares for the pets of needy people by providing free veterinary services to their sick and injured animals and by promoting responsible pet ownership.  The PDSA schools website contains educational activities and resources for ages 5-14.

PETA Foundation
The PETA Foundation is a registered charity committed to helping end animal suffering by providing all people – from legislators to children – with information.

Power of One (Canada)
Power of One is the humane education program of the Vancouver Humane Society, combining lively classroom presentations with short videos, visual aids and hands-on activities. Power of One programs are designed to encourage young people to critically think about pressing issues.

Roots & Shoots
Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s international education programme for young people. It inspires practical, positive action for people, animals and the environment by developing an understanding of how important a healthy planet is to human survival. The RootsnShoots website offers teachers a host of fun, free activities and resources for use with both primary and secondary school pupils. A free resource pack is also available for teachers who register their school.

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA)
The RSPCA animal welfare education department aims to further understanding of the principles and practice of animal welfare education. It enables participants to produce animal welfare education materials and resources suitable for the school curriculum in their country.

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)
UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife.  Participates in education about birds and their environment.  Details about RSPB educational programmes and resources, including the ‘Living Classrooms’ field teaching scheme are available.

SAFE (New Zealand)
Professional, NCEA-compatible resources that include; Ready-to-use lesson plans, texts from animal studies experts and a range of stimulating visual, oral and written material.

Scottish SPCA
The Scottish SPCA aims to prevent cruelty to animals and promote kindness and humanity in their treatment.  The Scottish SPCA offer free schools outreach programmes, education at animal welfare centres, educational resources and courses for young people and adults relating to animal welfare.

Share the World
Share the World is a free educational programme designed to help your students better understand and appreciate the animal kingdom. Pupils will use their thinking, reading and writing skills to work through the reproducible activities that form the heart of this programme. From this site, you can order a pack, see a complementary video online and make use of additional worksheets and lessons.

Sociedad Promotora del Bienestar Animal PBA
The society aims to promote positive relationships between human beings and animals and hence the reduction of social violence through the development of compassion and a sense of justice, responsibility and respect for living things.

The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA)
SPANA operates 19 veterinary centres and 21 mobile clinics which currently treat over 300 000 working animals each year. Manuals giving teachers lesson plans and fun activities that portray animals in a positive way are available in several languages, along with story books.

Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS)
WDCS work with local groups around the globe to bring the world of whales and dolphins alive for people, through exhibitions, events and interpretation centres, highlighting the threats to whales and dolphins and the need to protect them now and for the future.

White Cross Animal Protection Society
The White Cross is a small, nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers in Budapest since 1991. They focus on finding homes for hundreds of companion animals. They also have an educational programme, Animal Friends Club, and they provide presentations for children ages 6-12 in elementary schools. The programmes are free and available in both English and Hungarian, and more than 8,000 children have participated in the program so far. World Animal Net (WAN)
World Animal Net is a worldwide network of animal protection organisations, maintaining an online directory (hyperlink: http://worldanimalnet.org/) of 16,000 organisations and providing resources and training to improve the status and welfare of animals across the globe.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
WSPA works in partnership with over 1000 Member Societies in over 150 countries to alleviate animal suffering through hands-on work, education, lobbying and awareness campaigns.  WSPA believes in establishing multinational partnerships with other animal welfare groups and governmental organisations to make maximum impact by working together.
