Stimulus Response

Description: Produced by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) in conjunction with scientists from Cambridge and Bristol. This is the GCSE version of 'Let's Ask The Animals'. Describes how farm animals respond to a variety of stimuli through reflexes and various levels of learning, some remarkable. Pigs demonstrate how they perceive stimuli in the first moments of life, and demonstrate their remarkable sensory receptors. Hens run obstacle courses and show that they, too, have the mental co-ordination to learn from videos! Calves make us aware of internal as well as external effectors and sheep show their maternal instincts and learning abilities. (NB ASAB’s other video Let's Ask the Animals is also strongly recommended for younger secondary students).

A Tale of Three Puppies

Description: This book is the first published by Maggie Griffin. She aims to promote empathy and compassion amongst children by touching on important resopnsible pet ownership messages. This book could be used as a stand-alone lesson with discussion about the pets that children already have or wish to have and their interrelation with the care of that pet. It could also be used as a part in a series of independent units when pared with other books on animal care and responsibility. This is a storybook with a few color illustrations that can be thought provoking and lead to discussion about the pets that children already have in their lives. For the children that wish to have pets, it would open the door as to what they would do if they did have a pet.
